Luca - Cabled Baby Blanket

I am on a roll this week with my patterns! I am really happy about it actually as I have been off from work all week and have done quite a bit on my to do list such as cooking, redecorating and of course knitting. I have been on Ravelry so much this week my hubby is starting to call the laptop 'the axiom'. (If you haven't seen Wall-E, run out and see it. You won't regret it!)

I posted about this blanket awhile back (ok, nearly a year ago) but here's the pattern for 'Luca' (find it on Ravelry too, here) named after it's first recipient. I have realized that I didn't take down too many details about making this blanket in my notebook, so I apologize in advance but it's a simple rectangle so I hope this will suffice!

'Luca' - Cabled Baby Blanket

Materials used:

8 or 9 x 50g balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (I used colour 9)
5 mm needles ( I knit ‘straight’ on a long pair of Addi Circular needles so it was easy to handle)
Cable needle
Darning needle

Gauge: Sadly, I didn’t take note of this but this pattern can really suit any gauge

Size of FO: approx. 24 inches x 36 inches

Abbreviation: C8B – Sl 4 st to cable needle and hold to back, k4 then k4 from the cn.

Stitch Pattern:
This starts as a 13 Row pattern with two cable rows in the first sequence and one cable row in every sequence thereafter.

Odd numbered RS Rows: k10, p3, (k2, p2, k8, p2)* to last 15 sts, k2, p3, k10
Even numbered WS Rows: k13, (p2, k2, p8, k2)* to last 15 sts, p2, k13

Pattern:
CO 168 stitches with your preferred cast on method.
Knit in garter st until work is 1.5 inches.

To start stitch pattern:
Rows 1 and 3: k10, p3, (k2, p2, k8, p2)* to last 15 sts, k2, p3, k10
Row 2 and 4: k13, (p2, k2, p8, k2)* to last 15 sts, p2, k13
Row 5: k10, p3, (k2, p2, C8B, p2)* to last 15 sts, k2, p3, k10.

Continue and repeat Rows 6-13 only until work reaches desired length.

Row 6-12: follow odd and even number row pattern above.
Row 13: k10, p3, (k2, p2, C8B, p2)* to last 15 sts, k2, p3, k10.

To complete, end on Row 8 and change to garter st for last 1.5 inches.

BO when blanket is desired length and weave in ends. Block if desired.

Wow that blanket might be the perfect color, and what a sweet pattern!

And since you're a baker, here's a question: have you read any Maida Heatter cookbooks?

Hi! I'm about to start knitting this blanket, and have a clarification question about the pattern - after the first 13 row set, do the following sets have only 8 rows (so, you only repeat rows 6-13)? That's how I'm reading it, but I wanted to make sure. I'm so excited to try this - it's for my nephew who will be born in December. Thanks so much for sharing the pattern.

Bklyn Dahlia: Yes you have read it correctly. I am sure there was probably a better way to write it, but I couldn't think of one! The first set are just to set up the cable sequence, then you are cabling every 8th row after. Please email me if you are still unsure, I would be happy to go over it in more detail. Let me know how it turns out!

I can't think of a more clear way to write it - I am just always a little nervous when I start a new pattern. And I've never cabled before, but have always wanted to. I'll definitely send or post photos when I'm finished - maybe with an adorable newborn as a model!

Perfect ! it can't get any better. l am working on this pattern with the red jiffy yarn and l love the way it looks and feels. l will donate it to Threads of Love. And it is true, you can work it with any needles that suit the yarn you're working with. Even great when you are a beginner cable knitter.

I am so appreciative for your very detailed pattern and such a beautiful blanket. I am excited to get started but as a relatively new knitter, I was wondering if you could explain the C8B for me. I am understanding that you take 4 stiches off to the cable needle and I am not sure how to knit after that? Thanks sooo much!

I am new to knitting Well about a year and i just started my first cable project too. This is how i wrap my head around the abrevations for cabling. When you see the C pull out your cable needle because its time to twist The Number following is how many stitches you will be working on the twist so take and slip those on to the needle. Now you need to know where to hang them. If it say F thats the Front and B is the back so a pattern that says C4b would cast 4 stitches onto the needle and hang in the back where C3F is three stitches hanging in the front. After the stitches are hanging you are going to Knit the same number of stitches from you left hand needle as the ones you cast off then you will Knit the ones from you cable needle. Its really easy.

Thank you for this pattern! I can't wait to make this for my friend who's pregnant.

One question: I need to buy circular needles, but I'm not sure how long they need to be, or if I should get metal or bamboo. Do you think a specific type works better with this pattern?

Thank you,

Noa

Hi, I love this pattern! I am nearly done and was wondering if in your pattern when you say to end on row 8 if you are to cable that row or leave it. If I cable it then it looks rather puckered. If I dont then it looks like it just ends. Thank.

I am confused about rows 6-12 in the first set of 13 rows. Is this how the pattern starts:
Row 1 = Row 1
Row 2 = Row 2
Row 3 = Row 1
Row 4 = Row 2
Row 5 = Row 5
Row 6 = Row 2
Row 7 = Row 1
Row 8 = Row 2
Row 9 = Row 1
Row 10 = Row 2
Row 11 = Row 1
Row 12 = Row 2

Row 13 = Row 13

Thanks you for you help. This is such a lovely blanket and I'm looking forward to starting work on it.

Hello,
I have a question before starting Luca blanket: Size 8 needles work with Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino yarn? (Usually you use a much smaller needle with that yarn). thanks, Deb

HI I am a little confused in reading from "Starting at the Stitch pattern section". I end up with 169 stitches after the 1st Row (not 168). Isn't it the case that when you start the row you continue between the brackets until the end, or is from K10 & K13?

I've started on this for my 2nd whom is due September 17th 2012. Thank you for writing this! It's beautiful, and exactly what I was looking for. I'm using organic cotton in hot pink, we don't know the gender yet, but I plan to remove the dye anyway. lol.

I've done four or five rounds of the cable row at this point, but the initial rows now look very ruffled, or puckered. Will this be fixed if I block it, or do I need to restart again and do something different? I'm knitting it for a gift and want it to be perfect!

I had to use you tube to figure out the cable stitch they do it slow and you can pause it till next step FYI for beginners like me

I am confused about the rows 6 - 12? It doesn't appear to look like the photo with the border of garter stich around it. How do I get it to look like that? Its a darling pattern but I'm a bit confused. Please help.

I do accept as true with all the concepts you've presented for your post. They are really convincing and will certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are very quick for beginners. May just you please extend them a bit from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
